Cosmic, a groundbreaking dating app, has emerged on the scene with a unique approach to online dating. Unlike its counterparts, Cosmic is focused on providing a more genuine and personalized experience by combining personality quizzes and machine learning technology. The app aims to address the frustrations users often encounter with existing dating platforms, where the search for meaningful connections can be challenging.
Developed by Michael Sayman, a seasoned engineer and product designer, Cosmic is the inaugural product from Friendly Apps, a startup backed by $3 million in seed funding. Sayman’s extensive background in app development, which he chronicled in his book “App Kid,” led him to roles at tech giants like Facebook, Google, Roblox, and Twitter. It was at Twitter where he intended to craft teen-oriented product experiences, but the transition of ownership prompted him to embark on his entrepreneurial journey.
Central to the ethos of his new venture is the creation of apps that prioritize users’ well-being, diverging from the potential toxicity associated with modern social platforms. Sayman’s initial focus is on the online dating landscape, a realm he believes users are becoming increasingly disillusioned with. While existing dating apps may boast user-friendly interfaces, they often fall short in delivering effective matchmaking.
One of the key differentiators of Cosmic is its approach to profile creation. Instead of the conventional bio-writing process, the app offers users a personality quiz. This quiz delves into aspects of the user’s personality and preferences, such as interests, values, and aspirations. The responses remain private and are not displayed on the user’s profile. The app then employs machine learning technology to construct a profile that reflects the user’s personality traits based on their quiz answers.

Sayman conceptualized this approach recognizing that many struggle to accurately convey themselves through bios. Traditional bios may miss essential elements of one’s personality due to ambiguity or lack of guidance. Cosmic’s methodology replaces this challenge with a series of open-ended questions, allowing machine learning to craft a comprehensive profile based on the user’s input.
The app extracts personality traits from users’ quiz responses, including interests, favoured songs, and personal strengths. Sayman emphasizes that this method provides a richer understanding of users compared to conventional self-written bios.
Notably, Cosmic differentiates itself from apps like eHarmony by not using quiz results to match users with potential partners. Instead, the app generates personalized profiles and prompts based on the user’s quiz answers, akin to Hinge’s prompts.
Cosmic also stands out with its pricing model. While other dating apps often charge for premium features, Cosmic offers free access to core features like undoing swipes and seeing who likes the user. The app’s revenue strategy is still in development, as Sayman aims to prioritize user experience before determining the most suitable monetization approach.
As of its public launch, Cosmic is available in select regions, including the U.S., Peru, Colombia, South America, and Europe. The app’s beta testing involved a few hundred users, demonstrating its cautious and user-focused approach to development.
