Navinder Gill, a 40-year-old Indian-Canadian, recently bagged life in jail in British Columbia, Canada, for stabbing his wife to death.
Gill murdered his wife, Harpreet Kaur Gill, in December 2022. The couple had three children together, all under the age of 10.
British Columbia’s homicide investigation team has announced that Gill would not be eligible for parole for 10 years.
In a statement, Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) spokesperson, Sergeant Timothy Pierotti, said: “Incidents of intimate partner violence have a profound effect on families and communities.
“We’re thankful for the great work being done by Surrey RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) Victim Services and the Ministry of Children and Family Development who continue to support the family and the community.”
The attack happened at their residence in Surrey, around 9 pm on December 7, 2022.
Harpreet, 40, sustained many stab wounds and died in a hospital despite the life-saving efforts of first responders.
Navinder was nabbed on December 15 by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) and was charged with second-degree murder on December 16, 2022.
He pleaded guilty to Harpreet’s murder on June 22, 2023.
During the court proceedings last June, his lawyer argued that his client made a mistake.
The lawyer, Gagan Nahal, said: “He was very remorseful in court today. It’s a very tragic incident, that’s all I can say.”
