The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about selling and consumption of an unhealthy Mayonnaise brand called Whippy.

A recent statement released by NAFDAC says after receiving a complaint from a consumer, it took random samples of the product for laboratory analysis, which revealed unsatisfactory outcomes.

NAFDAC further stated that the product, which was sourced locally from the manufacturer in Onitsha, Anambra State, has become contaminated and exhibits a colour different from the original colour of mayonnaise, though they were still within shelf life.

According to NAFDAC’s statement, every Zonal Director and State Coordinator has been directed to carry out surveillance and withdraw the implicated batches of the unwholesome product. The agency further urged distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance to avoid consuming, selling or distributing the implicated batches of the unwholesome Whippy Real Mayonnaise.

The details of the unwholesome batch of the product are Pack sizes: 245g and 460g in plastic bottles; Manufacture Date: June 2022; Best Before December 2023; and Batch numbers: OA2GP220614A (Pack size 245g), OA2GP220611A and OA2GP220617A (Pack size 460g).

Part of the statement read: “Anyone in possession of the above-mentioned batches of Whippy Real Mayonnaise is advised to submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office. If you, or someone you know, have consumed this product or suffered any adverse reaction/event after consumption, you are advised to seek immediate medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

“Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicion of distribution and sale of unwholesome packaged food products to the nearest NAFDAC office, NAFDAC on 0800-162-3322 or via email: sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.”
