The Mexican Government has said that Mexico would resume sending short-term farmworkers to Canada after both countries signed an agreement on improved safety protections for workers on Canadian farms amid coronavirus pandemic.
Last Tuesday, Mexico said it would temporarily stop sending workers to farms hit with coronavirus infections after no fewer than two Mexicans died from COVID-19 following outbreaks in 17 farms in Canada.
Farmers in Canada rely on 60,000 temporary foreign workers, majorly from Latin America and the Caribbean, for planting and harvesting of crops.
In a statement, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry said that the Temporary Agricultural Workers Program (PTAT) had “entered into operation once again after a temporary pause.”
The statement added that Mexico and Canada “reached an agreement to improve the sanitary conditions of the nationals who work on farms.”
