Mayor of Mississauga reveals Peel split needed fast

Mayor of Mississauga, Bonnie Crombie, did not economize words when talking recently about splitting the Region of Peel and its three member municipalities.

During an interview with Khaled Iwamura, the publisher of insauga.com, Crombie said the municipal split, which will take effect on Jan. 1, 2025, can’t come soon enough.

A five-member transition board constituted by the government of Doug Ford is presently studying the Peel books, and that of Caledon, Mississauga and Brampton to figure the best way of carrying out the dissolution.

Crombie said she’s optimistic that the process will go smoothly.

She said: “The (transition) board was very well prepared and they were very committed to separation as soon as possible. It’s very important for Mississauga, in particular, that this process go quickly so that the third-largest city in Ontario (Mississauga) not subsidize the growth of the fourth-largest city (Brampton), and that they stand on their own two feet.”

The Mayor added that it’s also important that “…we have the ability to control our own destiny and reinvest our taxpayer dollars back into our city rather than to another tier of government or to another growing municipality nearby.”

She said residents can soon expect Mississauga and Ontario to “start making announcements” and added that “…no matter what decisions are made, we just ask that the process be very fair and very transparent. Obviously, there has been some misinformation that has been put forward publicly.”
