The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM) has issued a statement to apologize for its current and historical failure to tackle Indigenous-specific racism in the medical profession.
In a recent statement delivered by CPSM’s representatives at the Special Chiefs Assembly on Health Legislation, hosted by the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, the college said: “CPSM apologizes to First Nations, Métis and Inuit children, families, and elders for the racism that has occurred in their medical care, whether it was in the care they received, or should have received but did not. We apologize for the intergenerational trauma, suffering, poor health outcomes, and death that this has caused.
“We accept this responsibility, and we apologize.”
However, the college also promised to take action and said it would back and guide medical professionals to recognize and report acts of racism against Indigenous persons.
