Magna announces EV parts plant expansion which will create 560 jobs in Brampton

Ontario Premier, Doug Ford, joined delegates from Magna and city council recently in Brampton to announce the new $265-million facility to build electric vehicle battery enclosures that will create 560 new jobs in the city.

Part of a bigger $471-million expansion focuses on manufacturing electric vehicle parts. Magna revealed it plans to create 475 additional jobs at existing facilities in Guelph, Windsor, Belleville, Newmarket and Penetanguishene.

Ford said the government of Ontario has contributed $23.6 million via its Invest Ontario initiative.

In a news release from Ontario, Magna’s chief sales and marketing officer, Eric Wilds, said: “Magna’s roots in Ontario run deep, and we are excited about opening a new facility dedicated to a strategic electrification product. The Brampton facility, coupled with investment and growth in five existing Ontario facilities, allows Magna to keep up with customer demands across several product areas.”

The new 490,000-square-foot facility, which will be built at 100 Ace Dr., will be Magna’s eighth in Brampton.

In a separate release, the city said: “This builds on the City of Brampton’s ongoing support of our well-established automotive and parts manufacturing sector, including the Stellantis assembly plant, which will begin retooling and modernizing toward the company’s electric vehicle future at the end of 2024.”

In the release, Mayor Patrick Brown added: “The fact this facility will be focused on the burgeoning electric vehicle market only adds to that momentum and bolsters our city’s reputation as a leader in innovation and advanced manufacturing.”
