Local, International flights to shut down in Nigeria as unions embark on warning strike

Nigerian aviation industry sector unions have declared a two-day warning strike, starting today.

The unions are asking for better wages for workers and protesting the proposed demolition of aviation agencies’ headquarters in Lagos to erect an Aerotropolis.

Also, the strike aims at highlighting the non-enactment of minimum wage and other welfare demands in aviation agencies.

The unions involved are the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP).

Though the strike is expected to be total, there has been no formal communication released by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to inform airlines of possible disruptions in flight.

However, the unions have heavily mobilized members across the airports to ensure strict compliance, and the state council chairpersons and their executive committees are manning activities at every airport.

The unions have revealed that no outward operations of any kind would be permitted, and planes will be denied all offloading services.
