The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the suspected arson which occurred at the Akere Motor Spare Parts Market in Apapa, where a 65-year-old security guard died.

Lagos State Police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, revealed that the fire was extinguished at around 3am, but the security guard lost his life in the incident.

According to reports, the market was set ablaze by gunmen around 2:30am, resulting in the loss of millions of naira for traders who operate in the market. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service had earlier hinted that the fire might have been a deliberate attack on the market, as the deceased person sustained a gunshot injury.

Also, earlier speculation by the public suggests that the market was set ablaze by disgruntled Bola Tinbus supporters that are upset that the Igbo traders in the market did not vote for the APC presidential candidate during the recent general elections.

However, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, has urged Lagosians to be calm and assured them that the State Criminal Investigation Department will unravel the true circumstances surrounding the attack.

Hundeyin also warned against speculation and pledged to make the outcome of the investigation public.
