The demolition of illegal constructions at Banana Island, Ikoyi that have been earmarked for demolition has started, according to representatives of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA), the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, and the Lagos State Task Force.

This was carried out in accordance with the order of the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu that certain buildings be demolished.

The General Manager of LASBCA, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, supervised the demolition exercise, which started yesterday.

Also, the agency made this known in a recent tweet which read: “Banana Island: LASBCA Begins Removal of Illegal Structures.”

Last weekend, Sanwo-Olu led a delegation of government officials on the spot assessment to the site of the seven-storey building that collapsed and other ongoing construction sites in the area and described the situation as “irresponsible and unacceptable.”

Sanwo-Olu later ordered immediate removal of all structures in Banana Island without genuine building approvals, especially those that have violated building regulations and plans of the state, in the interest of public security and prevention of a repeat of the bad incident of another collapse during the tour.

Also, the governor ordered the sealing of additional nearby buildings and prompt demolition of others which include a two-story building on 310 Close in Banana Island, Ikoyi.
