The government of Kwara State has revealed it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the prohibition of street begging in Ilorin with the Hausa community in the State.
This development was disclosed recently by the Commissioner for Social Development, Hon. Abosede Aremu.
Aremu said the step was taken by the government because of the menace that street begging poses on major roads in the capital city.
She said her ministry and the Hausa community’s representatives have signed an MoU on the prohibition of street begging in Ilorin.
She sounded a note of reminder to the residents that there was a punishment and penalty for street begging which attracts a fine or imprisonment according to Kwara State Street Begging Prohibition Law 2006.
The delegates of the Hausa community, Surajudeen Hussain, Rufai Sanni and Mohammed Lawal assured the state government of their cooperation in making Ilorin streets free of beggars.
