Justin Trudeau plans summer cabinet shuffle — Mendicino may be affected

As the Liberals bounce back from a bruising few weeks in Parliament, sources inform radio-Canada that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is preparing to reshuffle his cabinet this summer.

Many Liberal sources that spoke to Radio-Canada revealed that many changes can be expected and that they feel believe Marco Mendicino is at risk of being dismissed as minister of public safety.

When asked about the possibility of a shuffle before the recent cabinet meeting, Trudeau did not say much.

He said: “I am going into a cabinet meeting right now. We’re going to have a lot of good work to do and I have nothing to announce today.”

Sources said Trudeau’s advisers have been laying the foundation for cabinet changes for weeks. Also, they said the cabinet shuffle is expected to happen sometime during the summer, which could be as early as July and that Trudeau’s Office is building the team that will be with him when the next federal election is called.

The cabinet change is an attempt to give the government a facelift after going through a difficult few months. The timing would offer the new ministers time to familiarize themselves with their files before the next cabinet retreat, scheduled to take place at August ending.

Meanwhile, Mendicino has been under great pressure for weeks. The way he managed Bill C-21 on gun control, communication problems over Chinese interference in Canadian politics and the controversy trailing the transfer of Paul Bernardo to a medium-security prison have damaged his image.

The Liberals that spoke to Radio-Canada said they believe Mendicino will find it difficult to keep his job at public safety.

While speaking in French, one elected official said: “Marco, I don’t think he will stay.”

When asked who would most likely be demoted, a Liberal strategist said: “Mendicino is at the top of my list.”

Liberal sources also suggest Mendicino could be given another portfolio in the cabinet to allow him to rebuild his image.
