Former Super Eagles striker, Jonathan Akpoborie has insisted that Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen deserves to win the African Footballer of the Year Award.
The 24-year-old, who led Napoli to its first Serie A title in 33 years recently continued his impressive form against Fiorentina at the Diego Maradona Stadium where his club celebrated being crowned champions.
Osimhen scored the record breaking goal in the 74th minute from the penalty spot for his 47th goal in 79 appearances in the league; a record he inherited from George Weah who held the record with 46 goals in 114 Serie A games. Also, he is the highest Serie A league goalscorer and is being scouted by Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
While talking to Complete Sports Nigeria, Akpoborie said he feels Osimhen has no serious competition that will stop him from being crowned as Africa Footballer of the Year Award.
He said: “Osimhen is our pride and I am happy with his incredible goal-scoring records this season with Napoli.
“Breaking Weah’s record is not an easy feat and I believe his general performance this season will help him to claim the African Ballon d’Or.
“There is no player in Africa that can match his record and that alone should propel him to win the award.”
