The Prime Ministers of Italy and Britain have revealed their intention to lead Europe’s war against illegal migration. Despite encountering criticism for their harsh immigration policies, the leaders have advanced their alliance with a joint op-ed that emphasizes their shared perspectives and goals. This amplifies their close friendship within Europe and their aligned view on many issues, including Ukraine and defence cooperation.
The revelation came after a meeting that was co-hosted by the two Prime Ministers with other key European figures. The meeting took place amid a bigger summit in Granada, Spain, and majored on addressing the challenges of illegal migration.
The UK wants to partner with Italy to tackle illegal migrant flows across the Mediterranean. Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Civil Service, Simon Case, went to Italy in June to meet senior members of the Italian government to lay the foundation for a potential deal.
Prime Ministers Rishi Sunak of the UK and Giorgia Meloni of Italy have been frustrated with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez over his refusal to put immigration on the agenda for the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Granada. Despite the refusal, an eight-point plan was agreed on at the sidelines of the summit.
Illegal migration has gotten to alarming levels, with around 45,000 people arriving in the UK in 2022 through small boats across the English Channel. In Italy, around 105,000 people arrived in 2022, signifying a 56% increase compared to 2021. The situation has led to sad incidents like the drowning of 79 people off the Greek coast in mid-June.

The collaboration between Italy and the UK implies a potential shift in Europe’s approach to illegal migration. By taking charge, the two countries aim to influence the broader European perspective and policies on immigration. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of their strategy, factoring in the complexities of immigration, has not been seen.
