India’s confirmed number of coronavirus cases has surpassed 8 million with daily infections dropping to the lowest level recently as heavy concerns rose over an important Hindu festival season and winter.
India’s case is making the country one of the worst-hit countries in the world as the country is closing ranks with the United States, a country with over 8.8 million cases.
Though life in India is moving back to pre-virus era with reopening of shops, businesses, subway trains and movie theatres and India’s third-largest state of Bihar with about 122 million people conducting elections, health experts have warned that mask and social distancing fatigue are fast becoming the norm and they can bring about fresh wave of infections.
India witnessed a steady rise in number of cases in July and encounter over 2 million cases in August with another 3 million cases in September. Since mid-September, the country has witnessed a reduced pace of coronavirus spread.
While talking about the pandemic, Dr. T. Jacob John, a retired virologist, disclosed that the infection curve was never flattened in most parts of Canada and the number of people who are now susceptible to the virus had decreased.
He however warned that the ongoing festival season could lead to an increase in the spread pandemic and result in localized outbreaks in areas where citizens converge without masks and didn’t abide by social distancing guidelines.
