Oladapo Oyebanji, also known as D’banj, has been detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
According to reports, the famous musician was arrested by ICPC agents who surrounded him and compelled him to present himself at the organization’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.
Insiders revealed that D’banj had evaded summons for weeks by saying that he was abroad for concerts each time he was told to show up for questioning over a fraud case.
The pop musician is charged with defrauding the Nigerian government hundreds of naira meant for the N-Power project, an empowerment initiative established by the Nigerian government in 2016 to combat youth unemployment and advance social development.
Investigators reveal that D’banj conspired with some dubious government representatives to add fictitious beneficiaries to the payroll of the scheme. Then, the recipients received payments into accounts that are now connected to the musician.
The ICPC decided to arrest him anywhere in Nigeria and abroad after he repeatedly declined invitations to appear for interview; by implication, he was forced to appear at the commission’s office recently and was detained after a long interrogation that started when he arrived.
His request for administrative bail was rejected by officials because they believed the singer could jump bail if released on bond.
