How to deal with an upset stomach, by Stanley Ugagbe

An upset stomach is described as a disorder of digestive function characterized by discomfort or heartburn or nausea.

According to experts, some of the symptoms are cramping abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, loose or liquid stools, increased number of stools, headache or body aches, fatigue, chills, with or without fevers.

Often than not, it is commonly caused by indigestion; overeating or eating too quickly. Fatty, greasy or spicy foods. Too much caffeine, alcohol, chocolate or carbonated beverages but to mention a few.

Experts recommend the following tips as panacea to an upset stomach.

1. Adopt the BRAT diet

According to Lena Beal, M.S., RD, LD, a Piedmont therapeutic dietitian, “The BRAT diet acronym stands for bananas, rice, applesauce and toast”.

Records have it that it was used in pediatrics when kids got sick and couldn’t tolerate anything. But this diet is helpful for anyone who has nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. It is a low-fibre and high-binding diet that can get you through a bout of stomach upset without making it worse. It is highly recommended.

2. Chamomile tea

Chamomile tea is a powerhouse of antioxidants and protects the skin from free-radical damage. It accelerates cell and tissue regeneration. Chamomile contains chemicals called flavonoids. These flavonoids are a type of nutrient present in many plants, and they play a significant role in chamomile’s medicinal effects.

Chamomile tea has anti-inflammatory properties that can help relax stomach muscles. This can reduce pain from spasms and cramps.

3. Peppermint (Mujaaja)

It is an aromatic plant, a cross between water mint and spearmint. Besides adding flavor to foods and drinks, it may help manage digestive problems, nausea, headaches, and other health issues. The menthol in peppermint leaves is a natural pain reliever. It is a common quick fix for nausea and stomach upset. Experts recommend the following ways of taking it: make a cup of peppermint tea, sniff peppermint extract, suckon a minty candy, or chew on the leaves.

4. Bitters and soda

Bitters and soda is a combination of seltzer and bitters, a cocktail flavoring infused with herbs, spices, fruit, barks, or other botanicals. The result is an incredibly simple drink that still feels special, filled with earthy complexity, subtle spiced notes, and fresh fizziness. Cocktail bitters contain ingredients like fennel, mint, ginger, and cinnamon that help relieve stomach disturbances. It is recommended that five or six drops of cocktail bitters into a cold glass of ginger ale, tonic, or club soda will soothe you right up.

5. Ginger

Ginger is a flowering plant whose rhizome, ginger root or ginger, is widely used as a spice and a folk medicine. It is a herbaceous perennial which grows annual pseudostems about one meter tall bearing narrow leaf blades.

Ginger has been used across generations to treat pain and some kinds of stomach disturbances. It has anti-inflammatory properties in all forms like supplements, beverages, and chewing it. Make a cup of ginger tea with fresh ginger chopped into pieces.
