(NC) Breast milk is a custom-made form of nutrition that changes to meet a growing baby’s needs. Breastfeeding offers many benefits for both mom and baby, and trends over the last decade show that Canadian mothers have increasingly chosen this method to feed their infants.
According to Statistics Canada, in the last 10 years, more women reported breastfeeding their babies, and since 2001— when maternity leave was extended in most provinces from six months to one year — more women reportedly breastfed for a longer period of time.
However families choose to feed their baby, there are ways to keep the feeding process natural. For breastfeeding moms on-the-go or for those busy moms tending to their growing family, there are pumping accessories like NUK’s Simply Natural Freemie Collection Cups that give mom the freedom to pump anywhere, anytime, without needing to remove her shirt. The collection cups fit discreetly and comfortably in her bra to enable hands-free pumping of up to 16Â ounces, and the system is compatible with all leading double electric breast pumps.
When mom is finished pumping, it is important to ensure milk is stored safely between meals. Use sterilized containers, like clean, BPA-free bottles or plastic breastmilk bags. Many moms find it helpful to label and date the stored milk so every meal for baby is fresh.
For times when baby is fed with pumped breast milk, look for a bottle that provides a more natural feeding experience like baby is used to. NUK Simply Natural Bottles are modelled after the shape of breasts, with up to nine nipple holes to make for a natural transition between breast and bottle. This way, baby can maintain a close-to-mom feel, even when being bottle-fed.
While changes to baby’s feeding is rarely challenge-free, planning ahead and finding the right equipment can help ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.
