Honduran President blames gangs for death of 41 women in prison riot

A recent riot in a women’s prison in Honduras has left 41 women dead and seven injured and the country’s president has blamed the riot on street gangs who wield power inside the prison.

No fewer than Twenty-six women were burnt to death and the remainder were stabbed or shot inside the prison in Tamara, about 50 kilometres west of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.

The deaths have been confirmed by the spokesman for the national police investigation agency.

While confirming the deaths, Yuri Mora said: “The forensic teams that are removing bodies confirm they have counted 41.”

Video clips revealed by the government from inside the prison show many pistols and a heap of machetes and other bladed weapons that were found after the riot.

The President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, said the riot was planned by Maras, a form of gang which originated in the US before spreading to Honduras and other Central American counties.

She said it was perpetrated “with the knowledge and acquiescence of security authorities”.

“I am going to take drastic measures!” she wrote in her social media accounts.

Reports have it that the brawl had broken out between members of rival gangs Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha.

Prisoners from the Barrio 18 gang burst into a cell block and shot other inmates or set them on fire.

Relatives awaiting news about inmates converged outside the morgue in Tegucigalpa.
