The government of Guyana has announced that it would make Spanish a compulsory subject in schools from September and turn to Cuba to tackle the shortage of nurses in the health care system.
While speaking at a news conference, President Dr Irfaan Ali said his administration is also looking at the possibility of employing Spanish teachers from overseas to ensure the project is successful.
Ali said he was in the process of obtaining a full assessment of the number of local teachers capable of teaching Spanish and noted that though there may be capacity at the secondary level, his desire is that students from Grade Four or Five begin taking classes in the subject.
He said in a bid to meet the demand, the government is talking with “bilateral partners to loan human resources” in the transition period until Guyanese teachers can fill the need across the country.
Also, Ali said he would be moving to have Ministers of government take Spanish language classes and he hopes that the private sector would join the bandwagon.
He said that the government is considering establishing an online platform so that any citizen who wishes to learn Spanish can do so and expressed regret at having to drop Spanish as a subject in secondary school.
He stressed further that learning a foreign language make students more marketable when they enter the labour market.
Ali also disclosed that his administration was looking to Havana to help tackle the shortage of nurses.
He said he recently held talks with the Cuban Ambassador to Guyana “to see if we can get Cuban nurses to come into the system now in the immediate period to help to fill that gap because of the immediate shortage that we have.
“The medium and long term is to train and retrain and train more than the capacity than we need,” he said.
