Google has agreed to pay $391.5m in settlement to 40 states in the USA after it accepted responsibility for tracking location of users without their consent.
The case which was described as the largest US privacy settlement ever brings victory for consumers after an investigation found the company guilty of charges.
According to the Attorney, citing evidence levelled against Google, the states’ investigation was triggered by a 2018 Associated Press story, which discovered that Google continued to track user’s location data even after they opted out of tracking by disabling a feature Google called “location history”.
The settlement becomes the biggest multi-state settlement in US history dealing with privacy.
According to analysts, the win against Google may lead to reinforced investigations of others.
