Gerard Pique has said that every of Barcelona’s four club captains will take salary reductions in a bid to help the financially troubled football club.
Pique has already sacrificed its wages to help the club register new signings while fellow captains Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Sergi Roberto are expected to do follow suit soon.
Pique revealed he had to be the first to take the wage cut so Barcelona could register some of its new players on time for the opening game of the 2021-22 La Liga season.
It should be recalled that Barcelona lost club legend Lionel Messi because they couldn’t offer him a new contract owing to La Liga’s strict financial fair play regulations, leaving him to make the shock transfer to PSG.
Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia, who both started the first match of the season couldn’t have been registered without Pique’s salary reduction.
Pique said: “It’s what had to be done. The other captains will do the same soon. Because of a timing issue, I had to be the first one so we could register the players. The captains have always intended to make the adjustments needed by the club. We are proud of this decision.”
“Sometimes there is a misunderstanding. After last season ended, the captains talked and we were on the same page to try to reach a deal with the club.”
The debt of Barcelona is over £1billion. The current President of the club, Joan Laporta has blamed the previous administration of Josep Bartomeu for putting the club in the critical situation that triggered Messi’s departure.
