Atlantic province, Nova Scotia, is battling extreme flooding after encountering the biggest rainfall in over 50 years. A recent storm dumped over 25 cm of rain in some regions, the equivalent of three months’ rainfall in just 24 hours. The result was devastating with roads being washed away, bridges weakened, and buildings overwhelmed.
The Premier of Nova Scotia, Tim Houston, described the situation as “scary” and “significant”. The property damage was almost unimaginable, with no fewer than seven bridges needing to be replaced or rebuilt. Houston stated that the province would demand substantial support from the federal government to deal with the aftermath.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has talked about the flooding and gave assurance that the federal government would support Nova Scotia. This flooding incident is the latest in a series of weather-related calamities that have hit Canada in 2023, alongside record-breaking wildfires and heavy rains causing floods in many eastern U.S. states.
A state of emergency has been declared in Halifax, Nova Scotia’s biggest city, and four other regions over the flood damage. The regional municipality in Halifax reported severe damage to roads and infrastructure and advised residents to stay home and refrain from driving.
According to reports, four people, including two children, are missing after their vehicles submerged in the floodwaters. Over 80,000 people were without power at one point, worsening the crisis.
