No fewer than five people have died and thousands remain without power after a fierce storm swept across Ontario and Quebec.
According to Gatineau police, a 51-year-old woman died when the boat she was inside capsized in the Ottawa River near Masson-Angers, Que. during the recent storm.
Ontario Provincial Police disclosed that a 44-year-old man was killed in Greater Madawaska, west of Ottawa after he was reportedly struck by a falling tree, while police in Ottawa revealed that one person died in the city’s west end.
Peel Regional Police said a septuagenarian woman was killed by a falling tree while she was taking a walk in Brampton, Toronto west.
OPP reported that an individual one person died and two others were injured when a camping trailer was hit by a tree near Pinehurst Lake in Waterloo Region.
Uxbridge Town in Ontario declared a local state of emergency after the storm significantly damaged the community. A statement posted on the town’s website revealed there were widespread power outages and many closed roads owing to downed trees and power lines. Residents have been asked to stay at home so municipal workers can focus on removing road hazards instead of managing traffic congestion.
According to the latest report, about 269-thousand Hydro One customers were without power, while more than 550 outages affected over 170-thousand customers of Hydro Ottawa.
Power lines and trees were knocked down across a strip of the province extending from Sarnia to Ottawa by fierce winds, which reached 132 km/h at the Kitchener airport at one point.
