First Lady of Rwanda advocates equal parenting responsibility for men

The First Lady of Rwanda, Jeannette Kagame, has advised men and women to share parenting responsibilities and not push their children down the road they believe they should go, but rather pull them by example.

She gave this advice while speaking recently during the Young Leaders Prayer Breakfast, an event that attempts to promote good values in leaders by bringing together leaders from different sectors of the society.

The event, which was organized by Rwanda Leaders Fellowship (RLF), with the theme “Young Leaders and Parenting Today,” brought together young people in government, the private sector, and civil society to talk about how to navigate parenting amidst other responsibilities.

While talking to participants during the event, Kagame said: “I suspect that you never really know the strength that gets you through juggling all that is required of you; you just do, because you must.

“We draw strength from each other’s candid, honest and brave sharing of our own experiences navigating through parenting, without a ‘mode d’emploi’ [a guiding book].”

While promoting gender equality in parenting, the First Lady urged men to play an equal and significant role in parenting. This advocacy recognizes that the responsibility of parenting should not be only attributed to women, but should be shared equally between both parents. By urging men to actively partake in childcare, household chores, and nurturing, the First Lady seeks to challenge traditional gender norms and promote a culture of shared responsibilities within families. This inclusive method empowers women to pursue their goals, fosters a nurturing environment that benefits children’s development and strengthens family bonds.
