The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has approved the nationality switch of former England youth international goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, to Nigeria.
By implication, the 22-year-old goalkeeper who is currently on loan at League Two club Wrexham from Arsenal, has now been granted FIFA’s approval to represent Nigeria on the global stage.
His last involvement with the U18s of England was over four years ago, which signals a potential shift in his international allegiance.
Reports have it that Super Eagles’ head coach, Jose Peseiro, contacted Arthur Okonkwo in October 2023, and was hoping he would be available for the AFCON, but had to settle for South African-based goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali.
He’s made 26 appearances in all competitions for the club and has 11 clean sheets at Wrexham.
Okonkwo was born in London, United Kingdom in 2001 to Nigerian parents.
