Fake phone bill scam happening in Brampton, Mississauga and GTA

A realistic phone bill scam is deceiving some residents in Brampton, Mississauga and across the GTA.

Recently, some people received a text from Fido, claiming that their monthly bill is now available. Also, the text provides an account number, payment amount, and deadline for the customer.

At the end of the text message are two separate links where the customer can view their bill and where the payment can be made.

Residents who are not signed up as a Fido member will know instantly that the message is a “phishing” scam and will most likely not click on any links.

However, Fido customers might have a difficult time figuring out the authenticity of the text message.

According to a statement on Fido’s website, the company shares information on how customers can protect themselves from falling victim of text message scams:

  • Legitimate businesses will not send out text messages with URL links to a different site prompting clients to input their banking information.
  • Look for spelling errors in URL’s or email addresses. Scam artists often register domains with little variations like www.ffido.ca.
  • Look for spelling and grammar errors in the message. Most reputable companies have editors that review everything before sending it out.

Fido also stated that their customers can exercise the option of blocking spam messages by forwarding the text to 7726.

Peel Regional Police have advised people to not reply to these messages and delete them as any response could notify scammers that your number is active, paving way for further spam messages.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has urged residents to never reveal personal or financial information to unverified people or groups.

If you think you have fallen victim to a scam, you can report the incident by getting in touch with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) at 1-888-495-8501.
