Evaluating the environmental impact of your vehicle

(NC) Electric and hybrid-electric vehicles are often touted as the most sustainable vehicle choices for eco-conscious consumers. While they do reduce emissions, the carbon emissions their their production may also be a factor in the decision to buy. So, what are you to do?

Another sustainable choice is to buy a pre-owned vehicle. This option allows drivers to own recent models in practically new condition without the environmental impact associated with producing a new vehicle.

Certified pre-owned vehicles undergo a detailed inspection, and they are covered through a warranty with many of the same features as buying brand new. For example, the Mercedes-Benz CPO program has strict eligibility requirements, scrutinizing each vehicle through a 166-point inspection process to ensure it is operating optimally. If any deficiencies are found during this process, they are repaired, replaced or reconditioned using only genuine manufacturer parts.

Choosing not only what you drive impacts your carbon footprint, but also how you drive. Here are a few simple and sustainable driving tips that can help reduce your vehicle’s environmental impact:

• By following the speed limits and going easy on your gas pedal and brakes you can improve your fuel economy and emit fewer emissions.
• Never idle for more than 30 seconds while sitting in your vehicle and remove heavy items from the trunk and cargo racks when they are not in use.
• A well-maintained car operates more efficiently than a neglected car. Following your vehicle’s recommended maintenance schedule and taking it in for routine care can boost your fuel efficacy and allow you to catch problems early on.
• Optimize your vehicle’s performance and efficiency by routinely checking your tires are properly inflated, change your air filters regularly and use the manufacturer’s recommended oil in your engine.

If in any doubt, check with your dealership mechanic to ensure your vehicle is properly maintained and running as greenly as possible.
