El-Rufai: Invading Niger is declaring civil war against northern Nigeria

Former Governor of Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai, has warned President Bola Tinubu that if ECOWAS troops attack Niger, that is a declaration of civil war against northern Nigeria.

El-Rufai, who has not been talking about recent political developments in Niger and the reactions of ECOWAS, gave this warning in a recent tweet.

While giving the warning, he tweeted: “As ECOWAS beats the drums of war, I recall the 1970s rock classic by Dire Straits – ‘Brothers in Arms’, because a war within our sub-region is a war between brothers.”

He added that “indeed, the people of Niger Republic are one and the same with those living in Northern Nigeria. Let us bend therefore over backwards to avoid this civil war between brothers.”

El-Rufai’s warning came after falling out with Tinubu over ministerial appointment, weeks after ECOWAS urged its troops to be at alert to restore constitutional order in Niger after President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted by members of his presidential guards in July.

During the second extraordinary summit on the socio-political situation in the Republic of Niger which took place in Abuja recently, ECOWAS president, Omar Alieu Touray, gave an order that the regional bloc’s forces be on standby to attack the beleaguered country.

Touray said: “We direct the committee of defence staff to activate the ECOWAS standby force with all its elements immediately.”

He added that the action was to “restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.”

ECOWAS Chairperson, Bola Tinubu, pointed out during the summit that the ongoing political crisis in Niger Republic was a threat to the stability of Nigeria and other West African countries.
