Denis Shapovalov has made history by becoming the first Canadian to reach the U.S. Open’s men category quarter-finals in the Open period.
He reached the last 8 after beating David Goffin 6-7(0) 6-3 6-4 6-3 in New York and he will next face Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain in the quarter-finals.
While talking about his accomplishment, Shapovalov said: “It’s quite insane how far I’ve come.
“Today was a very extreme match. I needed to play each and every point against him and match his soundness, his smoothness.”
Goffin started the match well and won the first set but Shapovalov rallied in the second set behind a powerful serve and strong forehand and the game changed in his favour.
The Canadian took every opportunity that came his way in the third set and put up a heavy fight against Goffin’s only break chance in the eighth game with his 11th ace.
Shapovalov calmed down and won the match on his third match-point to set up a quarter final clash with Carreno Busta, who defeated him in the fourth round at the 2017 Flushing Meadows.
While talking about Carreno Busta and his next game, Shapovalov said: “He’s beaten me every time on hard courts. So, it’ll be … another long battle.”
