DBEN Activating Student Success Awards Media Release – Celebrating Black Excellence at the 9th Annual DBEN Activating Student Success Awards

In a virtual live ceremony on Thursday May 27th, selected students who identify as Black in the Durham District School Board will be recognized for their achievements and their leadership at this year’s DBEN Activating Student Success Awards.

These scholarship awards were inspired in part by DBEN’s work with award-winning educator, Principal Baruti Kafele. Kafele stressed that the success of students is not something that happens magically. Student success must be intentionally activated.

DBEN educators understand that leadership opportunities for students must be created and cultivated to support their growth.

The virtual live event on May 27th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. will feature Tony Steele, of Canon Medical Systems Canada, as the keynote speaker. As a result of increased community support, the Durham Black Educators Network in partnership with DDSB is pleased to announce that at this year’s awards ceremony, 19 talented Black students will be recognized with 10 different awards and scholarships totaling almost $10,000.

The DDSB is responsible for public education in the rural settings of Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog Townships, as well as the urban settings of Ajax, Whitby, Pickering and Oshawa. The Board employs more than 7,000 teaching and educational services staff.

With 134 elementary and secondary schools and learning centres, the Board
accommodates more than 740,000 regular day students and thousands more who take advantage of a wide variety of continuing education and adult credit courses.
