Bombardier, a Montreal-based company announced today that it would cut 2,500 jobs from its aviation section owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement released, Bombardier said “the majority” of the job cuts would affect its Canadian manufacturing workforce. Majority of Bombardier Aviation’s Canadian employees are located in Quebec.
The move to downsize came at a time of global uncertainty all over the aviation industry owing to a substantial, universal reduction in global travel since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Also, it came just a day after the company announced that 196 workers working on its zonal public transit operations in the Greater Toronto Area has been temporarily laid off as a result of a drop in the use of those services.
A lot of Bombardier’s operations in the commercial aviation sector have dropped recently with the company selling off the remainder of its stake in the Airbus A220 program (the former Bombardier C-Series) and its Canadair Regional Jet program to Mitsubishi.
According to Bombardier, the 2,500 jobs will be cut off “progressively throughout 2020.”
