The Federal Conservative Party has won a parliamentary seat in Calgary Heritage, a seat that was left vacant by MP Bob Benzen. Benzen, who was voted to represent the area in 2017, revealed plans to retire and revert to private life by the end of 2022.
Shuvaloy Majumdar, a savvy policy advisor to Stephen Harper, and former Conservative foreign minister John Baird, won the election with a whopping 65% of the votes. Majumdar said his victory sends a stern message to the current Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.
The riding of Calgary Heritage is majorly part of the former Calgary Southwest, which was represented by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper till he retired. This fact emphasizes the historical importance of the seat. Liberal candidate Elliot Weinstein and NDP’s Gurmit Bhachu were neck-to-neck, slugging it out for second and third positions respectively, with very few polls left to be counted.
It is interesting to note that only about 28% of eligible voters participated in the election, reflecting the perception of Calgary Heritage as a stronghold for the Conservative party. Majumdar talked about his exposure to the struggles of ordinary Canadians during his campaign and vowed to address their hardships.
Also, he acknowledged his Indian roots and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in high offices.
He said: “What an amazing thing it is that this kid born of Indian origin…could go on to serve in the highest offices of this land and now stands before you as the next Conservative member of Parliament for Calgary Heritage.”
