The National Universities Commission (NUC) has uncovered a total of fifty-eight (58) unauthorized universities operating in Nigeria, with some falsely asserting affiliation with foreign universities within the nation.
Additionally, nine degree mills are presently under scrutiny, involving ongoing investigations and potential legal actions.
This revelation follows the suspension of degree certificates from two francophone West African countries. An investigative journalist recently exposed the expedited acquisition of a degree from a university in Benin Republic, leading to immediate deployment for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
In the list below, institutions that have ‘other campuses’ are indicated with “others”; those ‘operating anywhere in Nigeria’ have “anywhere” as suffix. They are as follows:

The NUC said alongside the closure, the subsequent Degree Mills are presently under thorough investigations and/or active legal proceedings. The primary objective of these actions is to prosecute the proprietors and reclaim unlawfully obtained fees and charges from subscribers, the body said.

For the avoidance of doubt, anybody who patronises or obtains any certificate from any of these illegal institutions does so at his or her own risk. Certificates obtained from these sources will not be recognised for the purposes of NYSC, employment, and further studies, the NUC said.
According to the body, the relevant Law enforcement agencies have also been informed of their further necessary action.
