Clayton Ruby dies at age of 80

Popular Canadian Lawyer & Activist, Clayton Ruby, has died. He died at age of 80.

Ruby was known for his works in constitutional, criminal law and civil rights. One of his unforgettable roles was when he was the 60th Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada, a role he lost in a surprise special election.

According to family sources, Clayton died from natural causes.  Ruby’s death stirred quite a sensation in Canada’s legal industry as he seemed like he was not going to die despite his age.

While talking about him, Brian Shiller, his long-time friend and legal partner, described him as a giant in the legal field, who remained at the top of his job for over 50 years. He said the news of Ruby’s death has triggered an outpouring of condolences and tributes all over social media.

Ruby was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1942. However, his family and early life remain a mystery.

His career started in 1976 when he became a partner with the law firm Ruby & Edwardh and Marlys Edwardh, the first woman to practice criminal law in Canada.

He was in this law firm till 2008, after which he teamed up with the Ruby Schiller Chan Hasan firm based in Toronto, Ontario. He became a member of the Order of Canada in 2006.

In 1963, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from York University and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Toronto in the year 1969. He got his master of Law from the University of California, Berkeley.

Ruby was married to Madam Justice Harriet Sachs for the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The union produced two children, Emma and Kate, and two grandchildren.
