The corpse of Ghanaian footballer, Christian Atsu, has been repatriated to Ghana ten days after he died during the devastating earthquake in Turkey.
His death was announced recently by his agent, Nana Sechere, who said Atsu’s body was found 12 days after the disaster happened in Turkey and Syria, claiming over 44,000 lives.
At the time of his death, he was playing for Turkish Super Lig side Hatayspor.
His corpse arrived at the Kotoka International Airport in Ghana on February 19 and the coffin was carried by Pallbearers as it was escorted off the plane.
While speaking at Kotoka airport in Accra, Ghana’s Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia said: “We hoped against hope, every day that passed, we prayed and prayed. But alas, when he was found, he was no more.”
The Vice President added the Atsu was much loved and would be sorely missed. “It is a painful loss, a very painful one.”
He promised that Atsu would be given a “befitting” burial.
