The state of Victoria is now the latest state in Australia to permit transgender people to change their gender on official documents, without having to go through the process of surgery.
According to the new bill, teenagers and children will now be able to choose their gender.
The state of Victoria, including Melbourne, has joined other states in the country to permit people to change the sex on their birth certificate.
Children whose parents permit them can officially change their gender or identify as non-binary.
Victoria’s upper house passed the bill 26-14 will become law after receiving royal assent.
For minors, a doctor or a psychologist will have to issue a statement in support of an application for gender change.
Gender activists were delighted by the new bill.

According to The Age, Attorney-General Jill Hennessy said: “These important new laws are about ensuring everyone can live their life as they choose, and that includes having a birth certificate that reflects their true identity.
“The current surgery requirement sends a painful and false message that there is something wrong with being trans or gender diverse that needs to be ‘fixed’ – that’s why we’re removing this cruel and unfair barrier.”
In 2016, Victoria’s government initially wanted to enact the birth certificate change but was met with opposition by the MPs.
