Cardinal Angelo Becciu, an Italian clergyman, has been sentenced to five years and six months in jail by a Vatican court. The court’s decision found Becciu guilty of multiple charges related to embezzlement. This marks a historic event, as Becciu is the highest-ranking Church official ever to face trial before a Vatican criminal court.
Becciu’s lawyer, Fabio Viglione, addressed reporters in the courtroom, announcing his intention to file an appeal on behalf of his client, maintaining Becciu’s innocence.
The legal proceedings involved ten defendants accused of various crimes, including fraud, abuse of office, and money laundering. All the defendants, including Becciu, had consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the trial.
Court President Giuseppe Pignatone spent 25 minutes reading out the verdicts and sentences. Becciu, along with the other nine individuals, received convictions on some charges while being acquitted of others.
The comprehensive trial, spanning two and a half years and consisting of 86 sessions, underscores the complexity and gravity of the legal proceedings surrounding these allegations.
