Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has emerged victorious in the recent election, securing a third term as the leader of the Middle East’s most populous nation. According to officials, Sisi claimed an overwhelming 89.6 percent of the vote, as announced by the National Elections Authority on Monday.
The election, which took place between December 10 and 12, saw an unprecedented turnout of 66.8 percent among voters, with over 39 million Egyptians casting their ballots for Sisi.
Despite Egypt grappling with various challenges, including the Israel-Hamas conflict in neighboring Gaza and its worst-ever economic crisis, there was little doubt about the outcome of the election. A decade-long crackdown on dissent has effectively eliminated any serious opposition to Sisi, who becomes the fifth president from the military ranks since 1952.
Sisi faced three other candidates in the election, none of whom gained significant prominence. The runner-up, Hazem Omar of the Republican People’s Party, secured 4.5 percent of the vote. Other candidates included Farid Zahran from the Egyptian Social Democratic Party and Abdel-Sanad Yamama from the Wafd party, though they received relatively marginal support.
This victory paves the way for Sisi to serve his third and constitutionally final term in office, beginning in April. Sisi first assumed power after the overthrow of the country’s first popularly elected president, Mohamed Morsi, in 2013, and he was re-elected in 2018. Over the years, he extended the presidential mandate, increased the limit on consecutive terms, and implemented constitutional amendments.
Sisi’s supporters credit him with restoring calm to the country after the tumultuous aftermath of the 2011 uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak. However, his tenure has also been marked by a controversial crackdown on dissent, leading to the imprisonment of thousands of political prisoners. While a presidential pardons committee has released about 1,000 individuals in the past year, rights groups argue that a significantly higher number were arrested during the same period.
