In an astonishing achievement, Sophie Garrington, a young rider from Leduc, Alberta, clinched her inaugural world title within two years of embarking on her horseback riding journey. The 10-year-old emerged victorious in the 2023 Extreme Cowboy Association’s world championship for the “young guns” category, encompassing riders aged seven to 11, after an impressive three-day competition in Texas in early November.
Reflecting on her unexpected win, Sophie expressed her excitement and astonishment in a recent interview. Extreme cowboy racing, a test of both rider and horse prowess, involves navigating obstacle courses, earning points for the intricacy of obstacles, horsemanship, and speed.
Sophie, accompanied by her horse Buddy, was uncertain about the competition’s intensity, having missed observing some of her fellow young gun competitors. Despite anticipating a second or third-place finish, she secured the top spot, describing the moment as both shocking and surreal.
Nicole Hirsekorn, Sophie’s coach from Star Struck Horsemanship, commended her dedication and meticulous approach to improvement. Sophie, who has been riding for less than two years, exhibited rare prowess for an inexperienced rider at such a high level of competition. Hirsekorn noted that Sophie’s commitment, combined with Buddy’s remarkable abilities, contributed to her success.
Darcey Garrington, Sophie’s mother, expressed surprise at her daughter’s rapid progress, highlighting the synergy between Sophie and her horse. Sophie spends approximately 12 hours a week in lessons or practice, with her father playing a significant role in her training routine.
Describing her initial fear of riding, Sophie reminisced about her early apprehensions, only to find comfort in the saddle atop Buddy, whom she affectionately refers to as “cute.” The journey has been nothing short of remarkable for Sophie’s parents, who initially found the training process tedious but are now astounded by the speed and comfort with which she maneuvers.
Looking ahead, Sophie has set her sights on the 2024 competition season, with aspirations of participating in the Calgary Stampede in the coming years—a goal that requires her to reach the age of 14. In the meantime, Sophie continues to embrace the joy of riding and the camaraderie with her equine companion, Buddy.
