Canadian Skier Evan McEachran Claims First Career Gold in Unusual Circumstances

Canada’s Evan McEachran secured his first-ever World Cup gold medal in ski slopestyle under unique circumstances. The 26-year-old athlete was awarded the top spot at the competition based on his qualification run after the finals were canceled due to severe winds in Stubai, Austria.

With the weather forecast showing no signs of improvement over the weekend, FIS, the international governing body for skiing, decided to determine podium placements based on the single runs completed. McEachran’s outstanding qualifying run, earning him 93 points, placed him in the first position.

The American skiers Mac Forehand (90.50) and Alexander Hall (88.75) claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively. McEachran’s fellow Canadian, Max Moffatt, received the sixth-place honor, while Jeremy Gagné finished in 15th.

Although McEachran’s victory came in an unconventional manner, it served as a testament to his skill and resilience. Hailing from Oakville, Ontario, McEachran carried the momentum from his silver medal performance in the final event of the 2022-23 season into the off-season. Notably, he had missed the big air season opener in Switzerland in October.
