Canadian Boxers Tammara Thibeault, Wyatt Sanford Secure Gold Medals at Pan American Games

Canadian boxers, Tammara Thibeault and Wyatt Sanford, displayed their exceptional skill and determination, earning gold medals at the Pan American Games with unanimous points decisions (5-0) in a thrilling display of talent and grit.

In the women’s 75-kilogram final, Tammara Thibeault faced off against Panama’s Atheyna Bylon in a hard-fought match. The two competitors were evenly matched through the first two rounds, setting the stage for an exhilarating final round where Thibeault emerged victorious. Reflecting on her achievement, Thibeault remarked, “It means the world. Out of all the tournaments I’ve been to, I’ve been able to capture gold, and I was missing Pan Ams. Now missing the Olympics, but hopefully we’re on the right path, and that’s what we’re going to get. I’m very proud of myself, very proud of my team. I couldn’t have done it alone.”

Thibeault, hailing from Shawinigan, Quebec, is set to pursue her golden collection at the upcoming Paris Olympics, building on her impressive resume that includes the 2022 world and Commonwealth Games titles. With her sights firmly set on Paris 2024, she aims to make history for Canada, saying, “I expect to come out on top. Expect to come out with a gold medal and make history for Canada.”

In a rematch of last year’s world championship, Thibeault’s strategic approach and quick-strike ability secured her victory in a contest that showcased the strength and skill of both fighters. Thibeault now holds a 2-0 edge in title fights against Bylon, setting the stage for a potential Olympic showdown.

In the men’s 63.5 kg final, Wyatt Sanford faced Mexico’s Miguel Angel Martinez in a high-energy bout. Sanford, a 24-year-old from Kennetcook, Nova Scotia, displayed relentless determination and sharp counters to clinch the gold medal. This victory adds to his remarkable journey, as he was the lone male boxer on Canada’s team at the Tokyo Olympics.

Reflecting on his win, Sanford shared, “Getting the gold medal is a huge accomplishment; super happy. Super proud of her; she did absolutely amazing. Just overall great performance from both of us at the Pan Am Games.” Sanford’s wife, Canadian Olympic diver Pamela Ware, had also achieved remarkable success at the Pan Am Games.

Canada further expanded its medal collection in Santiago with a gold medal in the men’s team pursuit track cycling event. The Canadian cycling team, composed of Carson Mattern, Campbell Parrish, Michael Foley, and Sean Richardson, showcased their exceptional talent by beating Colombia by nearly nine seconds. This victory not only secured gold but also lowered their own Pan Am record, demonstrating Canada’s excellence in the world of sports.

Carson Mattern, a member of the cycling team, commented on the overwhelmingly positive experience at the games, saying, “Just being around all the best athletes from our country as well as others uplifts us to do the best and represent Canada the best we can.”

The achievements of Thibeault, Sanford, and the Canadian cycling team highlight the exceptional talent and dedication of Canadian athletes on the international stage, making their country proud.
