Smoke from Canada’s devastating forest fires has crossed the Atlantic Ocean and is passing over Western Europe at high altitude.
According to reports, some areas in Portugal would have woken this morning to a strange red sun in the mist. This is part of the effects which otherwise carry no risk to air quality owing to the height of this slow-moving cloud of what is basically soot (black carbon).
The UK Met Office has been monitoring the cloud through satellite imagery, and predicts “some vivid sunrises and sunsets over the next few days”.

Meantime, back in British Columbia where wildfires have been persistent for weeks, there is no let-up. If anything, the fire’s intensity is increasing – and recruiting firefighters to combat them has not been an easy task.
