The Government of Canada wants to resume the compulsory random Covid-19 testing of fully vaccinated international passengers in four major airports.
The testing will commence on July 19 at Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal airports.
It seeks to help the government curb the spread of Covid-19 and detect new variants.
It should be recalled that the government stopped random testing for fully vaccinated international passengers last month after a series of complaints by airport authorities of extensive delays at airports. Meanwhile, testing was kept mandatory for travellers that were not fully vaccinated.
Under the latest move, partially vaccinated, fully vaccinated and unvaccinated passengers will undergo testing outside the airports.
Passengers will have the choice of making an in-person appointment at particular testing provider sites and pharmacies or booking a self-swab test virtual appointment.
Passengers selected for random testing will be required to finish the test within 24 hours after they arrive.
Passengers that are not fully vaccinated will have to run a test on the first and eighth days of their mandatory 14-day quarantine.
The Public Health Agency of Canada stated that if the test result is positive, the traveller will go for a 10-day isolation period.
While talking about the development, Canada’s Transport minister, Omar Alghabra, said: “As demand for travel increases across the world, today’s announcement marks an important step in our progress to streamline testing processes outside our airports while preventing the further spread of Covid-19.
“The Government of Canada will continue to protect travellers and employees and ensure our transportation system is safe, reliable and resilient for the long term.”
