In a major move, the government of Canada has announced the suspension of direct development assistance to Niger Republic over escalating concerns over governance and transparency issues. This moves marks a significant shift in Canada’s foreign aid approach towards Niger, reflecting growing international scrutiny of the effectiveness and accountability of aid programs.
Reports of mismanagement of funds, lack of accountability in public spending, and limited progress in tackling critical development issues have raised concerns among international partners like Canada. This decision is a pointer to the fact that the government of Niger to address these issues as soon as possible and effectively in a bid to restore trust and credibility in its administration.
In a statement, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said that Canada supports ECOWAS mediation efforts, and the democratically elected government must instantly be reinstated.
The Global Affairs Department disclosed that a bilateral development deal signed with Niger in 2020 had been expected to reach an annual budget of $10 million per annum by 2026.
$2.71 million was disbursed by the program in the 2021-2022 financial year.
