The Trudeau led government has introduced new measures to support international students who recently graduated from a university or a post secondary institution in Canada. Year 2020 has been unbelievably difficult for a lot of people, as such, the Immigration and Refugee Council of Canada (IRCC) recognize the efforts put in by all international students to ensure they graduated.

The measures have been incorporated into the Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) and will bring about seamless transition of study to working life in Canada.

The three newly introduced PGWP measures for 2020 are:

1. Students can carry out up to 50% of their studies online. This measure is for international students that went back to their home countries and are continuing their courses through online learning. This measure is expected to be valid till April 31, 2021.

2. Students that are enrolled in a minimum 8-12 month program and who commenced their studies abroad through online classes from May to September 2020 will be permitted to complete their total course online and still be eligible for the PGWP.

3. Students who started one or more courses abroad between May and September 2020 will be permitted to combine the length of their courses to apply for a PGWP, provided that the studies will span til April 2021 and a minium of 50% of the studies are completed in Canada.

One of the easiest ways an immigrant can start not only new life but also application for permanent residency in Canada is by obtaining PGWP. This work permit which is valid for three years can be obtained by graduating from a designated Canadian post secondary institution.

Any holder of PGWP can be hired by Employers for any length of time without a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), which makes becoming a Canadian resident and securing a good job a lot easier.

The PGWP gives ample time to work and it proves to the Canadian government that holders of the PGWP are not only educated but are also hard working and willing to contribute effectively to the thriving economy of Canada.
