Canada beat Japan in final World Cup warm-up match

Canada will travel to Doha for the World Cup with a win over Japan in their final warm-up game against Japan courtesy of Lucas Cavallini’s goal.

Canada faced Japan in Dubai in their final international friendly before playing Belgium in six days.

Japan scored the first goal in the sixth minute as Yuki Soma who was set up by a through pass from Gaku Shibasaki and volleyed the ball past Milan Borjan.

Canada equalized in the 21st minute when Steven Vitoria scored. Six minutes later, Tajon Buchanan’s shot was stopped by Japanese keeper, Shuichi Gonda.

The first 45 minutes ended 1-1.

In the second half, both teams had good chances but they failed to convert their chances.

Japan had a superb chance to take the lead in the 89th minute when Miki Yamane shot from outside the box but it rang off the post and stayed out. The match ended 1-1 at full-time.

Canada had a corner in the extra time but it was punched away by Gonda. However, in the 93rd minute, Richie Lareya was fouled in the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Lucas Cavallini stepped up, converted the spot kick and Canada took the lead.

The match ended 2-1 in favour of Canada which will play its first Group F World Cup against Belgium on November 23, 2022.
