Canada announces visa facilitation plans for earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria

Canada has announced measures to facilitate visa applications for those affected by the natural disaster in response to the devastating earthquake in Turkey, on February 6.

While making the announcement, the Canadian government has pledged to prioritize processing temporary and permanent residence applications which include refugee resettlement applications, for those affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

In a joint statement, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Sean Fraser and Transport Minister Omar Alghabra outlined the government’s commitment to help those affected by the earthquakes.

From March 29, 2023, Turkish citizens in Canada with expired visa and those in Turkey who want to apply to come to Canada will be able to use them with visa priority and ease.

Furthermore, in a bid to prioritize the overseas applications of those affected by the earthquake, Canada will waive the passport or travel document requirement and fees for permanent residency applicants that have lost their travel documents owing to the earthquake.

The government’s measures also aim to make it easier for citizens of Turkey and Syria who are currently in Canada but their visas have expired to extend their stay.

This will offer relief to those who are unable to go back to their home countries due to the earthquakes.

Minister Fraser reiterated Canada’s unflinching commitment to help those affected by natural disasters by stating that the government will always respond to emerging international crises and assist those in need.
