Canada and South Korea plan to commence talks on an information security agreement, which will allow for intelligence-sharing and higher levels of defense cooperation. The agreement will also make it possible for Canadian firms to bid on some procurement contracts.
The proposed agreement is very important considering the current challenges to global security and the rules-based international order.
Recall that the Canadian government launched an Indo-Pacific strategy last November, spending around C$2.3 billion ($1.7 billion) to upgrade military and cyber security in the region. The aim of the strategy is to strengthen Canada’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific region and back its allies, partners, and friends in fostering regional security and prosperity.

Earlier this month, Canada announced that it would deploy a military aircraft to Japan to back the implementation of United Nations Security Council sanctions against North Korea. The deployment seeks to support the global effort to denuclearize North Korea and foster peace and stability in the region.
