Recently in Taipei, a group of Canadian MPs met with the president of Taiwan to discuss the alleged foreign intervention and military aggressiveness of China.
During the meeting, Liberal MP John McKay talked about the recent Chinese military manoeuvres near Taiwan and said: “Even as we arrived here, there are 160 warplanes flying overhead and they’re carrying on naval exercises. We want them to know that Canada is a partner in Taiwan’s struggle.”

The relationship between China and Taiwan has been pugnacious for many years. China feels Taiwan is part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to control the island. On the other hand, Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state and has rejected the claims of ownership by China.
Historically, Canada has maintained a delicate balance in its ties with both China and Taiwan. Though Canada recognizes China as the sole legal government of China, it also maintains an unofficial relationship with Taiwan.
Also, Canada has backed Taiwan’s participation in international organizations where its membership does not depend on statehood.
In recent years, there have been increased tensions between China and Taiwan, with China taking a more decisive stance on Taiwan and increasing military presence on the island. Some politicians in Canada politicians have expressed concern about the situation, with some urging Canada to take a stronger stance in supporting Taiwan.
